While still on the launch pad, the lower end of the rocket caught fire. The crew capsule was successfully ejected and the crew rescued. Because of insufficient altitude, Soyuz T-10-1 is not classified as a space flight.
This launch failure caused the crew of Soyuz T-9 to stay in space aboard the Salyut 7 well over the 100 day safety limitation of the Soyuz capsules. Degradation of the craft's onboard systems was the reason for this limitation.
