This mission finally accomplished what had originally been intended for Soyuz 1: the docking of two capsules and transferring of crew.
The Soyuz 5 was a passive target for the approach and docking of Shatalov in Soyuz 4. This was the first docking of manned space capsules.
Even though the capsules were docked, Yeliseyev and Khrunov had to space walk from Soyuz 5 to Soyuz 4, an EVA lasting 37 minutes. Improved spacesuits and lessons learned by Leonov (Voskhod 2) aided the space walk.
